Not just a walk in the park. Is a Gad Circle a door into healing society?
Is there a big-picture pay-off to attending a Gad Circle?
Is a Gad Circle just another way to waste your time?
Yes to the first question.
No to the second question... Let me explain.
Our society in the West has never been more isolated and polarized. This is an awful combination. Post-Covid society is more hooked on isolating activities. We use social media but this isn't social at all. Instead we are caught in a "death scroll" watching posts from people we don't know.
Youth have been spending so much time texting and interacting over digital media that they are losing the nuanced ability to converse. Face to face conversations require that we pay attention to non-verbal body language, and non-verbal cues (like tone of voice, facial expression, and eye contact).
Social events are at an all-time low (according to a CBC - morning show).
This isolating climate makes polarization a real problem. Your phone and computer are learning the things you like, and they are trained to give you more of what you like, what you agree with, what you'll click on. Because of this, we are listening to people who think like us. We aren't naturally hearing opposite opinions.
Therefore because: 1) we are isolating from others and 2) we are not interacting with people who are different from ourselves, then 3) the society we live in is becoming less and less able to manage our differences, less and less able to handle variety, less and less able to meet change that comes in life, more and more tempted to see people who are different from us as evil, wrong, the enemy.
There is a healthy path forward:
A Gad Circle is a developing opportunity for you to encounter people who think differently from yourself.
It is a chance for you to develop skills in listening to people who might challenge the way you look at life.
It is a door into healing a couple of the big problems we face here in Canada.
I hope you'll try it out. Join us April 22nd at Ora Cafe, in Thunder Bay at 10:00. Here is the Ad for our First meeting
